When Your Pet Arrives at Exactly the Right Time
The end of the year brings a strange mix of stillness and motion. Outside, the days shorten and the nights stretch long. As the trees shed their leaves, they flutter in the air until they reach the ground. Plants begin to die back, storing their energy below the surface. The world pulls inward and invites us to rest and reflect.
Yet, around us, life feels busier. Holiday gatherings, old friends, family members we haven’t seen in months—or years. And we also feel the absence of those who are no longer with us. Like an ache we don’t always know how to name.
This season can bring joy and connection, of course. There is comfort in warm meals, soft lights, and familiar traditions.
We carry this all in our bodies: excitement, tension, grief, and joy. Sometimes all at once.
It can feel overwhelming and make us examine our lives in a big way:
Why did my life turn out this way?
How did I end up here, with these people, at this moment?
I wish I hadn’t made those choices years ago…
In all of this, our animals are witnesses. They feel all of it and amazingly, even without us asking they help us find peace again.
The Divine Timing of Your Animal’s Arrival
Our animals have a way of arriving exactly when our hearts are ready for them. We may not even realize it at the time, only to understand years later.
There are many stories of pets showing up in people’s lives in times of grief, transition, endings or an unexpected change.
In fact, I recently connected with a sensitive soul who shared a touching story. Her father had passed away, and soon after, this cat came into her life. She adopted him without expecting anything more than companionship. Over time, she noticed how much his mannerisms reminded her of her father. It felt like a comforting bridge between here and the other side.
Animals have this incredible capacity to become anchors for us.
Maybe you have a story like that too. That time in your life when your pet became part of your family. They arrived just when you needed them.
Finding Peace in Their Eyes and Presence
There is something about looking into your animal’s eyes that dissolves the noise of life.
As I’ve shared before, I cherished the bedtime ritual my kitty Chewy and I had over the years. I’d gently stroke his fluffy white belly, which he loved so much. Sometimes I would cradle his head in my hands and look deeply into his warm green eyes. I felt like we were looking at each other’s souls.
In those moments, it was like the waters within me reached a point of absolute stillness. I felt calm and peace transcend every part of my body. I felt like my whole life made sense – even the parts that were hard, painful, confusing and all the good memories in between.
It wasn’t just comfort; it was affirmation. This was meant to be. This connection, this presence, was exactly what my life needed. When I reflected on past choices I might have wished to change, I knew that without them, I wouldn’t have met him.
If I had changed one thing, he wouldn’t have been in my life.
I wouldn’t change a thing.
Even now, after his passing, that truth remains. The love and peace he brought into my life still holds me. He reminds me that even through the hard, messy, confusing parts of life, something beautiful emerges.
I’m sure you can relate too, feeling that beautiful sense of belonging with you and your animal.
This is one of the great wonders that our pets do for us. Unconditional love and peace.
Comfort in the Moments You Share
Animals are naturally wise. They teach stillness not by telling us what to do, but simply by being themselves. When you sit near your animal, notice how their breath moves slowly. Pay attention to the steady feel of their energy. They help your nervous system remember what calm and safety feels like.
Your pet is co-regulating with you. In those moments, the chaos and noise of the day starts to fade away. Perhaps you’ve had moments like this: your animal settling against you, their warmth grounding you, and their loving gaze meets yours.
Peace isn’t always something you have to seek. Sometimes it finds you, gently, through the animal who loves you.
If this season feels busy, or emotional, or a little heavier than you expected, try pausing for just a moment with your pet. Feel their presence. You’ll begin to notice how your shoulders relax. Your quickly beating heart will gently slow down and settle. For a moment or two, the world will feel a bit quieter.
Try this today:
Look into your pet’s eyes for a moment. Really look. What do you notice? How does your body respond when you let yourself soften into their presence?
When did your pets come into your life? I’d love to hear your story.
