Funny Animal Stories That Made Us Laugh

A cat is lounging on their back, looking happy and relaxed. Title of blog is underneath, "Funny Animal Stories That Made Us Laugh."

Our animals support us in so many ways every day. One of the most underrated is their incredible ability to make us laugh. Sometimes it’s that look they give that is absolutely hysterical. Or it’s those habits, perfectly timed moments or when they express a big emotion without words… animals have a great sense of humor.

I invited members of the Healing Animal Wisdom community to share lighthearted, funny moments with their animals. I’m so grateful to everyone who contributed. These stories are small glimpses of everyday life with animals. This collection of stories is a celebration of the joy, humor, and connection our companions bring into our lives.

The Great Chicken Nugget Heist

Max was a big gray cat with an unmatched love of food. Nothing was safe. Over the years, he’d helped himself to cake frosting, Mexican pastries, Cheez corn, and once even an entire package of deli ham. We learned quickly: food could never be left unattended.

Years ago, when my son Matthew was about three years old, his favorite dinner was chicken nuggets. To delight him, I’d arrange them into a smiley face and decorate them with ketchup.

So when I stepped away from his special dinner for just a moment… I should have known better.

Suddenly, I heard Matthew shrieking, “Mac! Mac! Mac! Nooo!”

I ran into the room and saw Max scurrying low across the floor with an entire chicken nugget clenched triumphantly in his mouth.

That nugget incident didn’t change Max in the slightest, but it definitely changed us. From then on, everyone in the house (Matthew included) became much more careful about guarding their meals.

In many ways, Max was a wonderful cat. But when it came to food? He was a very naughty boy.

A Collaborative Effort

Two dogs are walking, each with part of a sandal in their mouth. Two dogs are taking this one sandal to their mom in attempts to help.

Mako’s Important Announcement

After a successful trip to the litter box, Mako bursts into the room with maximum confidence. Tail swishing, zoomies activated, and what sounds like, “Mom!! Mom!!! Mommmmmm!” echoing through the house.

I love the way he celebrates the little things in life!

I Heard It From My Horse

One day while bringing my horses in for dinner, I heard it clearly from one of them:

“It’s his turn to look like a mule.”

I was so startled that I started laughing.

At the time, I had three horses in the field: Storm, Toppers, and Simon. Toppers had developed a habit of planting his feet at feeding time because he didn’t like the noise the automatic waterer made. He’d lift his head dramatically and refuse to move — very mule-like behavior.

It’s Toppers on the left, Simon in the middle, and Storm on the right.

The three of them hadn’t quite formed a herd yet, which made mealtime a bit of a juggling act.

A few days later, Storm suddenly froze in place, head in the air, completely unmoved.

“It’s his turn to look like a mule,” Toppers informed me.

“No, Sir, it is not anyone’s turn to look like a mule, we’re all going in now, so c’mon.”

So I calmly turned and walked off to the side. This was my usual trick for getting stubborn feet moving. Sure enough, all the horses followed along.

We made it back to the barn without anyone officially becoming a mule. That was the turning point for the three of them, they were now a herd, and they willingly came to eat whenever it was meal time.

The Two Timing Cat

My friend Sara growing up had a cat (I can’t remember the cat’s name), and the cat used to disappear sometimes for a day at a time before coming home. They always wondered where he was.

Then one day, the cat came home with a collar from another family! So the whole time, he’d been double-timing them and splitting his time between two households without either family knowing. LOL.

A Reminder from Finn: Go Outside and Play

Finn has such a bold personality and many funny moments, so it’s hard to pick a single story to share.

A quick note about our sweet boy before sharing—he was born in Wisconsin and traveled across the country with us. Now we are in Portland, OR and we don’t get a lot of snow. When we do, Finn has a blast romping around in the snow.

His favorite snow day activity? Tossing his ball in a snow drift and digging around to find it. Occasionally, he will launch it behind himself while pawing through the snow and he will hunt around with his nose until it’s found. The entire time his tail is wagging and he has the biggest grin on his face. If we could last as long as he could outside, I think he’d prefer to spend the entire day out in the snow. By the time we go inside, his face is covered in icy crystals.

Needless to say, when we do get snow in Portland it’s a special treat! And these playful moments remind me to embrace the childhood joy that snow days used to bring.

I’m always grateful for his not so subtle reminders that it’s time to a break or a walk. He is a goofy guy who loves to spend time outside, just like me :)
