How I Learned to Communicate with Animals

Animal communication might sound like something out of a fantasy book. The idea is fascinating but also has a magical feel. It’s possible you’ve wondered, “Can people really communicate with animals?” For a long time I was curious about this too. Many times over the years, I’ve talked with other pet owners and said things like, “If I only knew what my cat was saying!”

Now that I have been able to energetically connect with animals, I’ve discovered that it’s more about being present and open to them. Animals are full of wisdom and guidance for us.

My path to becoming an animal communicator wasn’t linear or planned. It was all very unexpected. This new chapter in my life started because of love, loss, and one cat who changed everything.

Today, I’m going to share my story with you.

My Intuitive Beginnings

I’ve always been intuitive and highly sensitive to energy all around me. Even as a child, I could sense when something wasn’t quite right.

I remember summer afternoons when the air felt heavy, almost electric. That feeling told me an argument was about to happen. My stomach would be churning with knots. Sure enough, my parents would fight soon after.

I also remember warning a childhood friend not to jump off the diving board a certain way at the pool. Thankfully, she listened to me. Within a few moments, we watched another kid almost get hurt doing exactly what I had cautioned against. My friend was so glad I had warned her not to do that. I was relieved too.

At the time, I didn’t have words for it. I just knew things. I could predict fire drills at school. I may have told a close friend in high school at some point, but it was something I quietly did for my own benefit. Fire drills used to give me so much anxiety. I didn’t like the sudden changes and extremely loud noises from the alarms. So my intuition helped me be ready.

Those early experiences were like whispers from the universe, guiding me long before I understood what they meant.

Chewy: The Cat Who Opened My Heart to Animal Communication

In 2016, my husband and I were still grieving the loss of our tuxedo cat, who had been tragically killed by a coyote. That heartbreak left us devastated. In the midst of that pain, I sought guidance from a psychic to help with the healing process.

During our session, she said something I’ll never forget:

“TK wants to come back… he doesn’t care if he has to return in purple polka dots. You’ll just know when you find the right cat.”

Her words stayed with me.

Not long after, I saw an adorable little tuxedo kitten named Mako on a shelter website. The moment I saw him, I just knew—he looked like TK and had the sweetest white “milk chin.” I called the shelter immediately and asked if he had any siblings. I imagined he had a sister. But no—he had a brother.

That brother was Chewy.

Chewy had big green eyes and black-and-white cow-like spots. It was love at first sight.

The boys were just four months old when we brought them home. They were tiny enough to fit in my hands.

Chewy wasn’t just a pet; he was my soul companion. When he got older, we got into a new special routine together. Every evening, he’d curl up on my legs as I stroked his belly and gazed into those green eyes. In those quiet moments, peace would wash over me. I’d often whisper, “We were meant to find each other.”

Years later, in 2024, my worst fear became reality: Chewy was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. My world and heart shattered. Facing his potential death broke me in ways I didn’t expect. I did everything possible to keep him comfortable and loved, but I knew our time together was limited.

And then…the dream happened.

The Dream That Changed Everything

The morning Chewy passed, I had a vivid dream unlike anything before. I also hadn’t been sleeping well since he got sick. So it was even more of a shock to have dreamed at all.

In the dream, I felt his presence so clearly. Just like I was right there with him watching him pass away. It was serene, like he was showing me his transition in the gentlest way possible.

I woke up in tears, unsure what to make of it. Was it just my imagination, or something more? I frantically looked around the house when I got up. Then sadly, I found my beautiful boy in the family room.

About a week later, I booked a session with an animal communicator. Somehow I knew to search for “animal communicator near me.” I didn’t even know what an animal communicator was but I believe that was Chewy guiding me there. I was grieving intensely and desired comfort. What she told me changed everything:

“That dream was Chewy’s gift to you. He was showing you that you can connect with animals.”

Her words unlocked something within me. That dream wasn’t just grief; it was an opening.

What Is Animal Communication?

Before I go further, let me explain what I mean by animal communication—because it’s often misunderstood.

Animal communication is an intuitive, heart-centered way of connecting with animals beyond words. It’s not about reading minds or “training” them—it’s about listening on an energetic level. Animals communicate through images, sensations, and feelings, and anyone who’s ever felt their pet “just knows” something understands this on some level.

When I communicate with an animal—living or in spirit—I’m tuning into those subtle signals. It’s about creating a bridge of understanding and compassion.

From Grief to Gift: Discovering My Abilities

After that session, I couldn’t ignore this soulful calling. I wanted to learn everything I could about this intuitive gift. I wanted to learn more so I could help others feel the comfort and peace I had experienced.

I began studying with Denise Dunlavy, a highly respected animal communicator known for her grounded and heart-centered approach. Her mentorship helped me trust what I was sensing and practice in a way that was ethical and compassionate.

Every session builds my confidence. Every animal teaches me something new.

Before stepping into this work, I spent years as a public educator. That experience taught me the value of structure, listening with presence, and holding space for others. I bring all of this to my work as an animal communicator. It’s important to me that my clients feel seen, heard and supported – along with having practical steps for what to do next after our session.

Why I Do This Work

People often ask me why I chose to become an animal communicator. The truth? I didn’t choose it. This soulful work came through Chewy, my intuition, and every sign along the way.

Today, I offer sessions that help loving pet guardians understand and closer to their animals, whether they’re living or in spirit. These conversations bring relief, comfort, and peace—not just for the animal, but for the humans who love them.

Chewy is still with me, guiding me every day. He’s the quiet reason behind every session, connection, and every story of healing I witness. This work is my way of honoring him and sharing his love with everyone I meet. 🧡
