An Inside Look at Animal Communication (How It Works)

When I first told my mom I was learning animal communication, she said:
"Oh! You’re like Dr. Dolittle!"
I laughed — and I hear this reaction often. When people hear “animal communication,” they imagine talking animals responding in English, like in a storybook or movie. While that image is charming, the reality is very different.
Animal communication is subtle, intuitive, and energetic — and in many ways, even more magical than the movies portray.
Animal communication is the art of connecting with animals on an energetic and emotional level. It allows humans to understand what their pets or other animal companions are feeling, thinking, and experiencing, even when they can’t speak our language. By tuning into their energy and listening with our intuition, we can form a stronger and more compassionate connection.
So, what is animal communication?
At its core, animal communication is an intuitive and energetic practice. It’s about observing and feeling the animal’s energy and receiving messages in ways beyond words. This can include:
Images or mental pictures — sometimes I’ll “see” an image of a favorite spot, toy, or activity that’s meaningful to the animal.
Words or phrases — short thoughts or ideas might pop into my mind that reflect what the animal wants to express.
Physical sensations or emotions — I might feel the animal’s excitement, anxiety, or comfort as if it’s in my own body.
Scents or tastes — occasionally, an animal’s energy comes through as a recognizable smell or taste.
A strong sense of knowing — sometimes it’s just a clear, undeniable understanding of what the animal is experiencing.
Some questions are simple — yes or no, like “Do you enjoy your food?” Others are more open-ended, such as “How are you feeling today?” or “What would you like your person to know?”
Occasionally, I perform what I call a “body scan.” I visualize the animal’s body in my mind’s eye, noticing which areas light up or draw my attention. It’s like having an anatomy map appear in my imagination — similar to how you visualize a scene when reading a book. This helps me understand not only their physical sensations but also areas of emotional or energetic focus.
What It’s Like for Me Personally
Before I begin connecting with an animal, I take time to quiet myself. I meditate, focus on my breathing, and create a calm inner space. This helps me shift from the usual busy, thinking mind into a receptive, intuitive state.
I start by looking at a picture of the animal and spend a few moments simply observing. I let myself sense their energy and introduce myself mentally. I send love and gratitude, letting them know I’d like to connect. This step is often more effective if their guardian has already explained the process to the animal — it clears the energy and makes communication flow more naturally.
From there, I ask questions and pay attention to the ways messages arrive, often referred to as the “clairs.” These include:
Clairvoyance – clear seeing
Clairaudience – clear hearing
Clairsentience – clear feeling
Claircognizance – clear knowing
Clairempathy – clear emotional feeling
Clairsalience – clear smelling
Clairgustance – clear tasting
Not every connection involves all of these, but often a few stand out and provide a rich picture of the animal’s thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
For example, in one session with a rescue dog, I had a strong knowing that the animal liked belly rubs (claircognizance). Their foster mom was like “I almost showed you a photo of him getting belly rubs! He loves them!”
Another time, a cat showed me a clear image of her kissing noses with her human mom (clairvoyance). Her mom said that was a special way that they have bonded over the years. She sent a few photos showing them kissing noses. She said, “I always kiss her on the nose and lips.” I believe that sweet kitty was showing me that image to represent their loving relationship.
Common Misconceptions About Animal Communication
There are many myths around animal communication. Some people assume it’s psychic reading or only for exotic or highly “special” animals. Others believe it’s a magical skill reserved for a select few.
The truth is, anyone can connect with animals, though some people have stronger intuitive abilities than others. Animal communication isn’t about predicting the future or reading minds — it’s about tuning in to the animal’s energy and listening with compassion. It’s not a “talking-to-animals” skill in the Dr. Dolittle sense; it’s more like learning the language of emotions, thoughts, and intentions.
Why Animal Communication Matters
Connecting with your pet or companion animal through energetic communication can:
Strengthen your bond – understanding what they’re feeling creates trust and mutual respect.
Provide comfort during life changes – moving, new family members, or illness can be stressful, and knowing their emotional state helps you support them better.
Help with behavioral or emotional challenges – insight into underlying stress, fears, or needs can guide training or care decisions.
Bring joy and insight – animals often express love, curiosity, and humor in ways that surprise and delight their humans.
When we learn to listen more attentively, we start to notice the small cues in their energy, body language, and behavior that we might have missed before. It’s a way of strengthening our empathy, patience, and connection.
The Art of Listening
Doing this work is much like being an artist — but my medium is energy instead of paint or clay. It’s about asking intentional questions while remaining open to whatever comes through.
Sometimes, the mind wants to interfere — to judge, filter, or second-guess what comes. But the real practice is trusting the process. Letting the images, words, or sensations arrive as they are, and then inviting the guardian to confirm or clarify what it means for their unique companion.
Every animal has a distinct voice and personality. Every connection reminds me of just how wise, loving, and present they truly are. And every session feels like a collaboration — the animal’s energy, the guardian’s input, and my intuition all working together.
How I Use Animal Communication
Animal communication can be used in many ways:
Daily check-ins: Understanding how your pet feels about their routine, environment, or new experiences.
Health insights: While not a replacement for veterinary care, sensing energy patterns can sometimes indicate areas of discomfort or emotional stress.
Behavioral guidance: Learning why a pet is acting anxious, shy, or frustrated can help guide gentle, compassionate solutions.
Emotional healing: Offering comfort, reassurance, or acknowledgment through energy can support an animal during stressful or transitional periods.
It’s always a collaborative process, with the guardian playing a vital role. Their understanding and feedback help clarify the messages, ensuring that insights are applied meaningfully in real life.
Animal communication isn’t about “talking to animals” the way movies portray it. It’s about listening with your heart, senses, and intuition.
It’s beautiful, grounding, and continually surprising. Every connection teaches me more about empathy, patience, and the wisdom of our animal companions.
If you’ve ever wondered what your pet might be trying to tell you, animal communication offers a window into their world.
Animal communication can transform the way you experience life with your animals.
In future posts, I’ll share real-life stories from my sessions so you can see exactly how animals express themselves. You’ll learn how their messages bring comfort, healing, and sometimes even laughter to the humans who love them.
With peace and light,
